I decided on the name The Quiet Middle due to my fascination with the idea of liminal space

— the psychological and emotional in-between where life no longer feels as it once did, but what comes next is still not entirely clear. It is the threshold between who we were and who we are becoming: the quiet middle ground often shaped by grief, trauma, addiction, depression, recovery, burnout, relationship difficulties, or profound life change.

From a counselling perspective, liminal spaces are not signs of failure or brokenness — they are deeply human periods of uncertainty, reflection, and transformation. They often arise when old ways of coping no longer fit, while a new sense of identity or direction is still taking shape.

The Quiet Middle was created for people navigating these uncertain spaces. Not rushed toward quick answers, but gently supported toward healing, clarity, and meaningful change.

About Tracey McDougall

ASCHP-Registered Counsellor, Cape Town

I became a counsellor because I believe that being truly heard — without judgment, without an agenda — changes things. Not always quickly, and not always in the ways we expect. But it changes things.

Over the years, my own personal challenges and journey of more than 18 years in sobriety have taught me a great deal about resilience, self-awareness, and the quiet courage it takes to change.

I work with people who are in the middle of something difficult. People who are exhausted, or grieving, or caught in patterns they can't seem to break. People who are functioning on the outside and struggling on the inside. People who aren't sure what they need yet, but know that something has to shift.

My approach is calm, direct, and grounded. I won't pretend the work is easy — but I will be honest with you about what I see, and I will meet you where you are.
